Stony Brook University Hospital

Rank #18 (Tied)
Cost: $120 million

For the first time since it opened its doors in 1980, Stony Brook University Hospital is embarking on construction projects to meet growing health-care needs.

The first phase of the $300 million master plan involved construction of a new orthopedic unit that opened late last year. The next phase is a $120 million project that will accommodate growth and upgrade the campus complex to better serve patients, visitors and staff.

The project includes a combination of 150,000 sq. ft. of renovation and 150,000 sq. ft. of new construction. It includes a new ambulatory care pavilion that will house the Long Island Cancer Center and the Breast Care Center; an enlarged emergency department; the Heart Center; a new neonatal intensive care unit; expansion of the radiology department; new obstetrics/maternity unit; and expanded and renovated operating rooms.

The creation of a new entryway to the complex - the cornerstone of the project - resolves conflict in the movement of people and materials, improves access and circulation and enhances security and control. The new gateway will also improve the patient and visitor arrival experience.
