The 161st Street Station is just across from the House that Ruth Built. Once it became evident that the New York Yankees were staying put, it became obvious that the station could use a makeover.

On an average weekday, 25,000 people pass through the station. When the Bronx Bombers have a home game, the number can more than triple.

In order to renovate the station while not disrupting train service, and accommodate the baseball season, NYC Transit Authority worked with the planning and architectural design firm di Domenico + Partners LLP to come up with a three-phase plan that extended over four years.

M.A. Angeliades Inc. of Long Island City, N.Y., and L.A. Wenger Inc. of West Babylon, N.Y., were brought on to serve as general contractors.

As a result of the $46 million project that was completed last year, the station now has improved pedestrian circulation between the underground and elevated sections of the station as well as between the station and the street and the stadium. A large new skylight and vent structure was built, permitting light and air into the below-ground station mezzanine.

The skylight also helps to visually unite the station's three levels - elevated, underground and street level.
