N.Y.C. and Federal Officials Reach Out on Safety

City and federal leaders help to spread best practices knowledge during Construction Safety Week.

As part of Construction Safety Week 2007 this spring, officials from the New York City Department of Buildings, the N.Y.C. Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration joined representatives from the Latin American Workers’ Project to speak to laborers about construction safety and distribute informational materials in multiple languages at a worker center in Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst Park district. New Destiny Housing Corp. recently hosted a cocktail party to honor building industry leaders who work to provide safe, low-income housing for domestic violence survivors. John DeBouter of Oakland, N.J., has been named “Tradesman of the Year” by Rebuilding Together Jersey City. DeBouter, training director and president of IBEW Local 164, was honored at a reception attended by more than 250 guests at Puccini’s Restaurant in Jersey City. Co-honorees included Don Capasso of Plumbers Local #14 and William and Carmine Della Manna, both of Carpenters Local #6.
