Geotechnical Conference Attracts New Blood

A conference in Connecticut on the technical challenges in foundation work attracted a large number of job-seeking college students.

The Deep Foundations Institute, in conjunction with the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, hosted its annual Geotechnical Conference in Berlin, Conn., last fall. Out of the 140 attendees, 30 were Manhattan College students last semester.

The event included presentations on current foundation engineering topics, such as a panel headed by Larry Johnsen of Heller and Johnsen in Stratford, Conn., and Tim Crowl of Haley and Aldrich in Hartford that discussed corrosion fundamentals, rehabilitation of marine structures, earth condition assessment, and corrosion of steel H piles, among other topics.

Precast Association Honors Local Concrete Jobs

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, a 2,000-member association headquartered in Chicago, has announced 24 winners of its national competition in three separate categories, recognizing the use of concrete in achieving project goals.

One project each from New York and New Jersey garnered recognition in the buildings category.

In New Jersey, the concrete institute honored Essex County’s Sportsplex Parking Garage in Newark as a co-winner in the Best Parking Structure category. The project team on the Newark garage included Clarke Caton Hintz Architects of Trenton, which was the architect; Fay Spofford & Thorndike of West Caldwell, N.J., the engineer; Prismatic Development of Cedar Grove, N.J, the general contractor; and Nitterhouse Concrete Products of Chambersburg, Pa., the precast concrete contractor.

In New York, the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook on the campus of the State University of New York at Stony Brook won in the Best Stadium/Arena/Sports Facility category. The SUNY project team included Dattner Architects of New York; Severud Associates Consulting Engineers of New York as engineer; the Tyree Organization of Farmingdale, N.Y., as the general contractor; and two precast concrete companies – High Concrete Structures of Denver, Pa., and Metromont of Greenville, S.C.
