GBC Unveils Safety Awards

The statewide contractors group recognizes projects with the best safety track records. Also, the American Council of Engineering Companies honors local leaders.

GBC New York Lauds Safety Leaders

The General Building Contractors of New York State awarded 12 general contractors with certificates of Commendation for Safety Excellence as part of an annual awards program.

The award recognizes the companies that perform best as measured by safety statistics compiled by the federal Occupational and Safety Health Administration.

The New York contractors honored for their safety records were:

• Bette & Cring of Latham
• Christa Construction of Albany
• Charles A. Gaetano Construction of Utica
• Iversen Construction of Gorham
• LeChase Construction Services of Rochester
• Park City Builders of Hamilton
• Picone Construction of Williamsville
• Pike Co. of Rochester
• Sano-Rubin Construction of Albany
• Scrufari Construction of Niagara Falls
• Sweet Constructors of Ballston Lake, and
• Zandri Construction of Cohoes.

The GBC represents about 175 general contractors engaged in public and private commercial, industrial, and institutional construction as the state chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, which has more than 7,000 general contractor members nationwide.

SMPS New York Honors Burden

The New York chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services recently held its annual Honor Awards celebration at the Millennium Hotel in New York.

Amanda Burden received the association's Public Sector award for her work as chair of the New York City Planning Commission, while Vishaan Chakrabarti was recognized for his work as vice president of the Related Cos. of New York, with the Development Award.

In addition, Cheri Melillo of New York-based Butler Rogers Baskett Architects, was awarded the Special Public Service Award for her work as president and executive director of Canstruction, a national design-build competition that combats hunger through the donation of canned goods. Marcy Stanley, business development director for the structures division of Weidlinger Associates of New York, received the Marketing Achievement Award.

Other winners included Barbara Thayer, president of B. Thayer Associates of New York, who was honored with the Marketing Champion Award, and Michael McCann, director of marketing at Urbahn Architects of New York, who received the Pinnacle Award.

ACEC Recognizes Top Engineers

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York recently recognized three engineers for their exemplary leadership and contributions to the state's consulting engineering community at an awards event held in Rye Brook, N.Y.

This year's award winners were:

• David Burney, commissioner of the New York City Department of Design and Construction, who was honored with the President's Award for his leadership in promoting and implementing the Mayor's Design and Construction Excellence Initiative

• Paul Grosser, president of P.W. Grosser Consulting Engineer & Hydrogeologist of Bohemia, N.Y., who was named Engineer of the Year for taking part in the creation, organization, and realization of groundwater resource management programs for Long Island, and

• James Hofmann of Stantec Consulting Services, a professional design and consulting firm based in Alberta, Canada, who was named New Principal of the Year for assuming increasing responsibility since joining Stantec in 1988, culminating in his current position as principal and practice leader for the firm's New York Region Transportation Group based in Rochester.
