Architecture Groups Honor New Yorkers
A pair of architectural associations recognized design
professionals in the region for their contributions.
Heritage Ball Honors Local Leaders
The New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects
and the Center for Architecture Foundation jointly honored
the contributions of several industry leaders at the annual
Heritage Ball held last fall at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.
The groups presented the President's Award to J. Max Bond,
Jr., a partner at New York-based Davis Brody Bond and a former
New York City planning commissioner, honoring his efforts
to support design excellence, activism, and diversity in the
profession.
The Center for Architecture Award went to Amanda Burden,
who is director of the New York City Department of City Planning
and chairs the City Planning Commission, recognizing her achievements
to promote better design throughout the city.
The organizations also recognized Frank Sciame, CEO of New
York-based F.J. Sciame Construction, for his contributions
as a builder, and presented the Foundation Award to the New
York Restoration Project, a group that sponsors city beautification
projects and education programs for children.
IBEW Noted for Volunteer Work
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local
164, based in Paramus, N.J., won recognition for its recent
volunteer efforts from the Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer
Council.
The council honored Local 164 with its Good Business Award
in the Outstanding Employee Volunteer Corps category. The
award recognized IBEW's work on Project Grandma, a breast
cancer fundraising and awareness campaign. It also recognized
the local's efforts to prepare care packages for U.S. troops
in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as work for home repair and
renovation programs in Bergen County that assist low-income
and elderly homeowners.
ASLA Inducts Local Architects
The American Society of Landscape Architects recently inducted
41 new members to its Council of Fellows, including architects
from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The designation
recognizes sustained achievement in four categories: works
of landscape architecture; administrative work; knowledge;
and service to the profession.
The society selected Daniel Krall, a landscape architect
based in Ithaca, N.Y., in the category of knowledge, for his
research on women and minorities in the field and on design
needs of health care facilities.
The society inducted Dickson DeMarche of Wilton, Conn., and
John Paul Carman of Medford, N.J., on nominations in the category
of service to the profession.
It also inducted Katherine Weidel of Lyndhurst, N.J., in
the category of administrative work.
Lathers Union Hosts Post-Tensioning Seminar
New York's Metallic Lathers and Reinforcing Ironworkers Local
46 hosted a seminar last fall aimed at promoting the use of
post-tensioned concrete.
The participants discussed challenges in spreading the use
of post-tensioned techniques in the New York market and highlighted
projects using post-tensioned reinforced concrete, such as
the Victory Bridge built last year between Sayreville and
Perth Amboy in New Jersey, the AirTrain rail system for John
F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, and Long Island's
Roslyn Viaduct.
