Industry Mobilization Continues; DDC Selects 3 Cleanup Teams
The New York construction industry is continuing to mobilize
its forces to expedite cleanup and rescue efforts in the aftermath
of the World Trade Center disaster.
The New York City Department of Design and Construction has
hired three cleanup teams: AMEC and Bovis Lend Lease LMB,
Turner Construction and Plaza Construction and Tully and DeFoe
Construction. Equipment, supplies and volunteers are not needed
at this time.
AMEC Vice Chairman John Cavanagh, who is also chairman of
the Contractors Association of Greater New York (CAGNY) and
president of the Building Trades Employers Association
(BTEA), said CAGNY is now coordinating the efforts of the
local construction industry and that no more supplies, such
as goggles, respirators, work gloves and hard hats are needed
at the present time. If we need more, we know where
to get them, he said.
A meeting is presently underway with the three main teams
involved, according to a Bovis spokesperson. The location
of the meeting was not disclosed, but the spokesperson said
the efforts of the three teams will be more organized
as a result of the meeting.
Executives of the other firms making up the DDC-hired teams
could not be reached for comment because of ongoing difficulties
with busy telephone lines and switching problems.
