Since being completed in 1915, Waterbury, Conn.’s 90,000-sq-ft government center has suffered a great deal of wear and tear—and in early 2000, vandalism—which ultimately led to the building being closed for multiple code violations. But the ornate Beaux-Arts building, designed by Cass Gilbert of Woolworth Building fame, has been brought back to life courtesy of a meticulous four-year, $32-million renovation.
In total, 100% of the building’s exterior was kept intact as well as 80% of all interior walls and finishes.
“The design team feels that this is the most accurate restoration of this time period of public spaces existent in Connecticut,” says DeCarlo & Doll, the lead designer.
