Top Projects 2006-2007
Bar Keeps Rising on Top Dollar Efforts in the Region
Anyone looking for proof that the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut region has shifted to a higher gear only has to look at the new threshold that it takes to make our list of the top projects started or completed in the past year.
Two years ago, only 11 project starts were valued above $200 million, and last year, 18 were. This year, all 20 project starts on the list clocked in at $220 million or above, including three topping $1 billion.
On the completed projects side, the equation is similar, with only nine completed projects on our list last year valued at more than $150 million. This year, the region produced 18 projects above the $150 million threshold.
In addition to promising statistics, this year’s list features a candy-store window selection of signature projects, from new stadiums for the Yankees, Mets, Jets, and Giants, to New York City’s first major expansion of its subway system in decades with the start of work on the Second Avenue Subway. Major bridge, residential tower, office complex, courthouse, and railyard projects round out the construction surge.
Please see our profiles on the pages that follow of the top 20 projects that broke ground and the top 20 that achieved substantial completion over the last year.
Clarification and Correction:
In our June 2007 issue, two of our Top Project profiles had omissions in the team lists accompanying the stories. On the Verizon Center project, our box should have included Gilsanz Murray Steficek as structural engineer, and on the Second Avenue Subway project, we should have listed GZA GeoEnvironmental as the prime geotechnical engineer. Also, on the Gateway Center at Bronx Terminal Market project, we incorrectly defined the roles of the design team: BBG Architects is design architect and architect of record, while GreenbergFarrow is master planning architect and retail consultant.
