Top Projects 2005-2006

Ranking the Biggest-Dollar Efforts in the Region

This year's ranking of the Top 20 projects started and the Top 20 projects completed in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut may signal a promising trend for the region's development and construction market.

Whereas last year's list had only 11 new project starts valued above $250 million, this year's list had 18 such starts. The high-dollar volume starts made for a list that far outpaced the value of the top completed projects in the same timeframe.

The high value of the project starts underscores a positive outlook for many contractors and consultants in the region as large development efforts have gotten under way. And several major developments - such as projects at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan and Brooklyn's Atlantic Yards - have yet to start or hit full stride.

The industry's biggest projects completed in the last year also show a robust diversity of construction efforts, including New Jersey's extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system, several new power plants in New York City, the 7 World Trade Center office tower in Manhattan, and various residential complexes around the region.
Our coverage focuses on the top 20 projects that broke ground and the top 20 that reached substantial completion over the last year - a list that includes more than $20 billion worth of new buildings and major infrastructure work. See profiles of the top-ranked projects on the pages that follow.
