Former Editor, New
York Construction News
"As only the third editor of New York Construction News,
my tenure began on April 20, 1959. Our singular office in
the Grand Central office building was so narrow I could touch
two walls by extending both arms! Three desks sat one behind
the other in what really should have been an elongated broom
closet. My then incessant pipe soming would fil the 'coporate
suite' with white, billowy clouds that would disapper only
when the postman or a visitor opened the door, creating a
draft in the one-windo0w office
and Marion and Graham
Ford would breathe a sigh of relief.
In December of 1959, we showed 43 new skyscrapers planned
or undre construction in New York City, the largest one being
the 50-story Grand Central Terminal Office Building that would
become known as the Pan Am building. Ironically, the New York
Construction News would be displaced by construction . . .
and wold move to 342 Madison Avenue and an even smaller 'broom
closet' office. An otherwise caring and father-like boss,
Graham Ford hated to pay New York City rents.
